The island went into decline during the Roman Empire, but developed in the Byzantine era. Sacked by the Saracens and belonged to the Genoese and the Venetians and then to the Knights of the Order of St. John who fortified the island, using material from the ancient city. Conquered by the Turks, the Italians and then the Germans. In May 1945 belonged to the English until 1948 when returned to Greece.
